Mangoes are the king of summer. It’s nearly impossible to resist mango shakes and mango ice cream. Although most people enjoy eating mangoes all year, some suffer from skin problems such as acne. While it is true that mangoes can lead to acne, that’s not all. Mangoes have been shown to be beneficial for skin health in a variety of ways. Do you still have questions about mangoes and pimples? Here are some Skin Benefits of Mango: 

1. Mangoes contain a lot of antioxidants. This helps to flush out toxins from the skin’s inner layers, keeping it clear of bacteria and other skin problems. 

2. Mangoes can reduce signs of ageing. A study published in the journal ‘Nutrients’Mangoes’ high level of vitamin A helps to regulate cell differentiation and increase epidermal proliferation to counteract the effects of photoaging. 

3. Mangoes support collagen production. Mangoes are rich in carotenoids and flavonoids as well as vitamin C and mangiferin. This could help improve collagen bundles. 

4. Mangoes are a good choice for sun protection. The study revealed that beta-carotene, and other carotenoids found in mangoes, may provide photoprotection via chemical reactions with UV-induced reactive oxygen substances (ROS), and may interfere with UV-induced genes expression.

Mangoes can be good for your skin health if you eat them in moderation.

But why is it that some people develop acne after eating mangoes. Ritu Khaneja, a nutritionist, explains that people with insulin resistance may experience an increase in acne after eating mangoes. This is because mango has a High Glycaemic index which means it raises blood sugar. Mango is not the only food with high Glycaemic content (chocolates and pastries, candy, etc.). It can cause insulin spikes in our bodies as it has an effect on our oil glands by increasing our sebum production, leading to flares during Mango season. 

Mango, with its variety of vitamins and mineral content, is good for the skin. However, it is best not to eat too much. High Glycemic Foods such as chocolates and candies are best avoided by those with insulin resistance.
