A community-based rehabilitation program (CBR), may be a good way to provide services for people with disabilities in areas with conflict like Afghanistan, according to a new study by the Brown School and School of Medicine at Washington University.

“Access to Services from Persons with Disabilities: Is Community Based Rehabilitation Making A Difference?” is the title of the paper. The paper was published in May by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Jean-Francois Trani was associate professor at Brown School. Parul Bakhshi was assistant professor of occupational therapy at School of Medicine was the senior author.

CBR programs are designed to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services for people with disabilities that include economic, educational, and medical interventions.

The study was designed to determine if large-scale CBR programs would increase access to multiple services such as education, employment, advocacy, and community awareness.

Researchers recruited 1,861 CBR participants with disabilities between July 2012 and December 2013. CBR participants were followed up from 2012 to 2015 and interviewed three more times. They found that CBR participants were more likely to meet their needs than the controls.
