6 Yoga Mudras for Weight Loss

Yoga was founded by Yogis. They used their mind, bodies, and breaths to discover postures and positions that could improve the health of their bodies. Yoga mudras proved to be extremely effective, and Yogis began to incorporate them into all their yoga practices.

Yoga mudras can be described as simple hand gestures that activate energy flow within the body. Mudras can also be used in classical dance forms to communicate stories or articulate emotions.

Yoga mudras are well-known for their healing properties. It is also possible to lose weight and stay fit by using the right yoga mudras.

Yoga Mudras for Weight Loss

Yoga has been practiced since ancient times to maintain a healthy mind and body. Yoga’s breathing techniques help to improve concentration, mindfulness, and focus. Yoga has evolved over the years but it still adheres to Ayurveda’s core.

Yoga considers the five elements, namely – ‘Jal’ (Water), ‘Prithvi’ (Earth), ‘Akash’ (Space), ‘Vayu’ (Air), and ‘Agni’ (Fire), to be the core focus points in our body. These elements can cause illness or poor health. Yoga mudras can help restore balance and prepare the body to fight any future illnesses.

 Here are some of the most effective yoga mudras that have been practiced and passed on from generations.

These mudras have been shown to be effective in treating chronic diseases and improving mental health. These mudras are known to boost the weight loss process and help a person achieve good health and fitness –

1. Surya-Agni mudra

The fire element is represented in the Surya Mudra, or Agni Mudra as it is commonly known. This mudra activates the body’s fire energy and restores the fire balance. The mudras allow the fingers and hands to create connections and increase the flow of energy.

Many people have difficulty losing weight due to poor digestion. Surya mudra’s fire element is known to improve digestion and increase metabolism. Regular practice can help you lose weight.

The Surya mudra can be performed in the privacy of your own home. First, lie straight backwards. The thumb should be joined to the thumb by moving the ring finger towards your palm. Keep your hands on your knees and thighs, and stay seated.

In the meantime, you may practice meditation or breathing techniques. Surya mudra must be performed for 45 minutes daily, with 15-minute intervals in between. The Surya mudra is more beneficial when it is practiced early in the morning. 

2. Kapha-Nashak mudra

The three temperaments are Vayu, Kapha and Pitta. Vayu stands for air. The Kapha, Pitta, and Earth elements represent fire, earth, and fire, respectively. The Pitta element, which is found in the body, represents fire and is known for speeding up the body’s metabolism. The Kapha element, which represents earth, can cause excess weight.

The Kapha-Nashak Mudra is designed to balance all elements and remove excess Kapha from the body. The Kapha-Nashak Mudra improves digestion by increasing metabolic activity and the production of fire.  

To perform the Kapha Nashak mudra, it is important to sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Bend your ring finger and little finger towards your palm and join them with your thumb. Keep the position as comfortable as possible by applying pressure.

This mudra should be practiced for 30-45 minutes daily, with 15-minute repetitions to reap the full benefits.

3. Linga Mudra

The Linga mudra is also often known as Lord Shiva’s mudra. Yoga is deeply intertwined between Hindu and Buddhist religions. Many believe that the Gods practiced meditation and yoga. The Linga Mudra is a powerful mudra that helps to channel inner conflicts.

The Linga Mudra is a symbol of the victory over negativity. This mudra can be practiced to awaken the body’s fire, which in turn produces energy that can rejuvenate the organs. The digestive system is activated and energy flows through it to address any issues. Linga mudra helps in weight loss by improving the body’s metabolism. The heat generated with this mudra obstructs the growth of a toxic substance called ‘Ama,’ which is known to accumulate fat in the body. 

You will need to sit comfortably with your legs crossed in order to perform the Linga Mudra. To improve concentration and avoid distractions, keep your eyes closed. Next, press your palms against one another and interlock the fingers. Remember to keep the Left  thumbs upright.

This mudra should be practiced for 20-30 minutes daily. This mudra produces more heat by increasing the pressure against your palms.

4. Vaayan Mudra

The Vaayan Mudra is closely linked to the element air. The body must be able to energize itself with air properties, which help improve the nervous system. Vaayan Mudra can help people become more self-aware, and to practice a higher level of consciousness if it is done correctly. It is easier to lose weight and keep it off. 

 In order to perform the Vaayan mudra, you will need to be seated on the floor in a secured and ventilated space. To begin the process, keep your spine straightened and your eyes closed. To begin, bend your middle finger and index finger towards the palm. Join them with the thumb.

This position can be held by applying a little pressure. To feel the positive effects from the Vaayan mudra, practice this position for 15-20 minutes each day.

5. Gyan Mudra

The Gyan Mudra, which is the Sanskrit name, is also known by the mudra or knowledge. The Gyan mudra should be used in conjunction with other yoga postures and breathing exercises.

The Gyan Mudra is known for its ability to increase concentration and allow the body and mental functions to flow more smoothly. The Gyan mudra is known to aid those with irregular sleep patterns and promote a healthy and natural sleep cycle. Insufficient sleep is often thought to be a major reason for weight gain. The Gyan mudra is a way to increase metabolism and lose weight.

To reap the full benefits of yoga mudras, it’s important to be positive. 

You will need to lie down on the ground, with your legs crossed, in order to practice the Gyan Mudra. Keep your back straight with your eyes closed. Next, touch the index finger’s tip to the thumb with your other fingers.

6. Prana Mudra

The word ‘Prana’ means ‘life.’ The Prana mudra essentially means the ‘mudra of life’. This mudra is considered superior as it is believed that it represents life itself. Prana mudra activates energy in the body, allowing organs to function effectively. Regular practice of the Prana Mudra will activate the root chakras, allowing energy to flow freely throughout the body. Pranayama is the best way to practice Prana Mudra. 

You can perform the Prana Mudra by sitting on the ground with your legs crossed. Concentrate by keeping your back straight, and your eyes closed. The mudra should be done with both hands.

Connect the tip of your thumb to the tips on the ring and little fingers. Repeat the process with the other hand. To feel the Prana mudra’s effect, hold the position for between 20-25 minutes.

You can also perform these mudras. However, you should make some lifestyle changes to help activate these mudras and aid in weight loss. Here are a few tips that can be followed –

  • It is important to eat a balanced, nutritious diet. Home-cooked meals are encouraged as much as possible.
  • Avoid excessive sugary drinks and juices.
  • Try to live an active lifestyle.
  • To help you lose fat, exercise regularly. To keep your mind and body engaged, you can introduce new variations to your daily workout routine.
  • You can find a group of yoga practitioners or do yoga at home. Yoga strengthens the body and helps to relieve stress and negativity. 
  • The mind and body must be monitored. To improve your breathing, you can do some breathing exercises in conjunction with the mudras.
  • To flush out toxins, remember to stay hydrated throughout the day.
